Twitter to start selling pre-roll ads ahead of Periscope videos

Twitter is going to start making money from Periscope, its live streaming video service. Announced earlier this week, the social platform confirmed it will begin selling pre-roll video ads to run ahead of some Periscope content, which means users will have to sit through a short commercial before they can watch the live video.

With Twitter needing an advertising boost, having missed Wall Street’s revenue estimates last quarter, more video ads could help. The move further indicates how Twitter is attempting to reaffirm its presence as a key player in ‘Big Social’, after being dwarfed by social platforms that have been quicker to innovate around salient trends and improved mobile functionality.
