Facebook trials GIF button in comments

Facebook has confirmed that it is trialling animated GIFs in comments from sources such as GIPHY and Tenor. At first the GIF comment button will only be available to a small percentage of Facebook users, but could roll out to everyone if it proves popular, working in a comparable way to the GIF button in Facebook Messenger, which allows users to browse trending GIFs and search for specific reactions in-line. If the test is well received, Facebook comment reels may soon be filled with ‘reaction GIFs’; typically taking the form of a clip of a movie, television show, or cartoon to express the emotion of the user. This additional layer of reaction and commenting functionality illustrates how Facebook is set to further lock-in engaged users by giving them a host of ways to express themselves across the platform and keep them scrolling for longer,
