The growth of big social channels continues to surge, with sizable increases in monthly active users for Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram. In figures published this week it was revealed that the number of people globally using Facebook each month increased to 1.94 billion, of which nearly 1.3 billion use it daily, the company said.
Furthermore, Instagram this week announced that it has doubled its user base, to 700 million monthly actives in two years, fuelled by Stories, web signups and better onboarding on low-end Android phones. Instagram’s growth rate is actually speeding up. It took just four months to add the last 100 million users since hitting 600 million in December, while it took six months to go from 500 million to 600 million. For reference, this makes Instagram more than twice the size of Twitter. Soon it might join Facebook’s other properties in the billion-user club, since WhatsApp and Messenger have 1.2 billion users and Facebook 1.8 billion.
As we continue to experience a surge of key social channels, the size of our potential audience that can be looped into brand communications and reached globally looks set to increase and embolden the influence brands can hope to exert.
