After borrowing Snapchat’s ephemeral content sharing through Stories, Instagram is this week looking to go after the channel’s other key functionality – messaging.
Instagram this week tightened its regulations surrounding how its users connect and share in direct messages, letting users decide whether recipients can view once, replay temporarily or see a permanent thumbnail of it in the chat log. Prior to this, all messages could be replayed temporarily and then would completely disappear.
Instagram has a bigger ambition surrounding this improvement in its messaging service: offering its users greater ability to customise how they share, greater functionality, and ultimately a reason to spend more time within its ecosystem, than its competitors.
